This Module we practiced basic boning and corsetry skills to realise both the silhouette and functionality of a complex and highly structured garment for an international celebrity client. The knowledge and understanding of contour cutting through product realisation was an integral component of bringing my work to completion. We had 3 weeks to design, drape, and sew our corsets and toiles. So our proffesor showed us 4 dress designs from different designers to choose and alter as much as we’d like to.
Production.
-
Draping over the corset and hip padding.
When choosing our client we had to examine their silhouette, and body dimensions to dichipher which areas of the dress form would require padding. I ended up choosing Lupita Nyong'o as my client.
-
Draping the skirt.
When it came to the skirt I wanted it to be straight up and down. While also coming up in the back.
-
Draping The Peplum
This was my first time doing a peplum so I was worried about the structual integrity not being in place. We weren't allowed to use bonining for it only the corset.
-
Draping The Bodice
The bodice was interesting for me. I've draped plenty of bodices before but this was my first draping over an internal corset. which it came out nice.
-
Piecing Everything Together
Machine sewing everything together was the simple part of porduction, because I make sure to check all my patern pieces are notched and notched correctly.
-
Adding The Cascade To The Skirt
The cascade wasn't originally in the design. The original Idea was to slice and spread the skirt in eight equal parts to give flowy fullness around the edges. However after discussing with my professor she suggested I use spiral half circles to sew together to make the cascade.
-
Asembling The Peplum.
The only tricky part of the peplum was choosing the right interfacing for it. Not too light to where it just flops around. Not too stiff and heavy to where it doesn't move. I need an interfacing that would hold it's shape, and be movable. The stylines and silohouette were inspired by the snail house by famous Mexican Architect Javier Senosiain.
-
Finalizing The Skirt.
After pressing the skirt with careful consideration. I was delighted to see the skirt set and flowed beautifully.
-
Finalized Toile.
I would say due to the time frame this module was the most challenging. However I learned so much in relation to draping and fitting a corset. I obtained the goal as well which was ton hold up my dress with an internal corset.
